\=/ Klados revisited: gorge erosion processes (4 replies)

A few months ago Herre, a forum regular, raised a question regarding the formation of the massive sedementary deposits at the mouth of the Klados gorge.
www.sfakia-crete.com/forum2/read.php?7,2232,2263#msg-2263

While reading the geological literature I found a possible explanation for these deposits (specifically, in an article given to me by another forum member, Simon-78).

The story begins with the observation that the current climate of Crete cannot explain the formation of the gorges. Neither have there been any large rivers which shaped the gorges, as for example with the gorge du Verdon in south France. Geologists concluded that at some period in the past the Cretan climate was a lot wetter than it is now. Among other reasons, a study of sedementary deposits leads to the conclusion that there was significanatly more rain during the past ice age. It began about 2.5 million years ago and comprised cycles of glacials (cooler, drier, lower sea level) and interglacials (warmer, wetter, higher sea levels). The cycles lasted between 40-100 thousand years.

It was further assumed that the rain of the interglacial period cound best be described as deluges .. very large but relatively infrequent storms. We can see in a small scale the effect of such deluges. Consider what happened in the Illingas gorge in 2000 or 2001. This photo illustrates the structure of the debris which was flushed out of the gorge:
Multiply this effect in severity and frequency, over thousands of years, and it is easier to imagine how the Klados deposits could be made.

I’d like to add another consideration, and this is the peculiar weathering characteristics of limestone. It cracks and splits easily into fissures. The following photos illustrate:
We’ve all seen the deposits of crystals etc. in fissures as a result of re-deposited dissolved carbonates. See left insert. This could also result in large sections of gorge walls collapsing, almost like icebergs breaking off a glacier. Right insert is from the Illingas gorge. Thus, rather than merely slow water erosion, we can imagine more dramatic deposits of rubble in the gorges, which is then flushed out by the heavy rain storms.

However, there is another problem. To quote from the original article:

Quote

In crete today the distribution of coastal debris at the gorge mouths is not by any means uniform. For example, precisely the absence any suggestion of a former alluvial fan deposit for the largest of all the gorges, samaria. Also, no trace of an old delta can be recognized at the mouth of the tripiti gorge, while between these two gorges the mouth of klados gorge has the mightiest and grandest alluvial remains in crete. It is not likely that the spillage during the interglacial periods were limited only to certain gorges.

In effect, he is making the same observation that prompted me to question the simple ‘slow erosion of rising fault scarp’ which is presented as the general model of gorge formation. In other words, there are still too many visible differences among gorges. We need other geological processes to explain these differences. One possibility which the author considered was the following:

Quote

This phenomenon must have affected all of the soil of the valleys and gorges, although outcome depends on the valley cross-section, the size and catchment area. For large branching and glaciated water-rich gorges, such as samaria, the debris could have been washed out almost completely, while in and above the shorter, very narrow and steep gorges such as Klados the debris stayed relatively higher.

This can be illustrated as follows:
Green marks the drainage of the Tripiti gorge, yellow marks Klados, and red marks Samaria. Apparently, the volume of water from Klados was just low enough to not be able to wash all the sediment and debris out to sea. This is probably not the whole story, but it gives an idea of the processes involved.

I can close with a comment on the ‘slow erosion of rising fault scarp’ model. This model works from the Ha gorge as the prototype of gorge formation. Here is the Ha gorge, the arrows indicating the fault scarp (photo taken from a different scientific publication):
The specifc process (erosion developing at some sort of cliff face) is common enough. This photo illustrates the same process, at a point just east of Sellouda. Notice the symmetrical alluvial deposit at the base:
So, while an erosion process which forms a Ha-type gorge is common, it does not always result in a gorge, and not all gorges are formed by eroding fault scarps. Each gorge has to be examined individually if the details are to be understood.

((0*)) Cretan Earthquakes (1 reply)

Hi all

In a previous topic, Domata Beach, we discussed a lot about all kind of seismic phenomena. Last month I was back in Sougia and I made some photographes of the rocks near the Sougia harbour. Take a look at [www.heersma.eu] .

Clearly can be seen that the uplift of Crete took place during several earthquakes, not one. Take a look at the first pictures. The various lines indicate the different earthquakes. However, between the lowest line and the sea level still is some 5-6 meters. My guess is that the cause of this is the big earthquake in the 4 th century AC.

In the harbour we saw a nice fish, which appeared to be a small tuna fish. Man, this guy was fast in the water. Along the concrete walls of the harbour 1000's if not 10.000's of small fish were visible as a black cover. This tuna fish had the day of its life. It was great to see that he swam a little away from the fish, kept silent in the water, the small fish (atherini I guess) regroupt and then suddenly he attacked again. This repeated several times. Hundreds of atherini jumped out of the water while the tuna fish entered the group, some landed on the concrete.

Anyway, let's hear what you think of the earthquake lines.

Herre

\=/ The Sfakian gorges (15 replies)

The Sfakian gorges - speculation

Conventional wisdom interprets the Sfakian gorges as the result of water erosion of a fault scarp, taking place over millions of years. While water erosion is obviously a factor, it never seemed to be the whole story to me.

A recent question, regarding the Fliskounias ‘dam’ in the Eligias gorge, got me thinking about the matter again. In particular, an entry by Erno ( [www.sfakia-crete.com] Fig 9c) prompted me to take a look at my photos (and search through dim memories of incidental field observations) for evidence of tectonic activity in Sfakia.

<div id="div_ccd0e1175bbcb42f7b0acec656ea293e"

And, in the accepted tradition of scientific classification, there is also one major anomaly which doesn’t fit the scheme (see separate entry which follows). I stress that this is only informal speculation, not answers. It represents questions about the geology of Sfakia that I’d like to have answers for.

TYPE 1: water erosion. The area covers the Ilingas gorge and all gorges east. The most distinctive evidence for long term water erosion is in the extensive alluvial fans which comprise most of the Frangokastello plain. The structure of the gorges plus alluvial fans is practically textbook water erosion of a fault scarp.

TYPE 2: faulting. The area covers Tripiti gorge to Eligias gorge. This area has the most visual evidence for faulting as a major cause of the gorge structure and height differential, with water erosion playing a secondary role. I can’t say anything about the timing of the faults or the direction of movement. Noteworthy is the absence of sea level alluvial fans, considering the presumed volume of mass wasting from the gorges in this area. Also, the distinctive feature of the Samaria gorge is it’s rapid height loss quite far inland. It can be almost 1000m ‘deeper’ than equivalent levels of gorges on either side. This implies some differences in the mechanisms creating the gorges.

Here's a sketch, using Google earth. Green dashed lines indicate possible fault areas, red lines fade AWAY from downward tilt direction (bright end defines the direction of downward tilt).

The simple story is as follows:
(i) One (or more) fault line(s) runs roughly north-south along the Eligias gorge. This may be scarp faulting, characterized by a slope on the west side of the gorge, and a steep cliff on the east side of the gorge. The tilt in a roughly NW to SE direction. In this photo it is easy to see the strata tilting down to SE from east side of Samaria Gorge into Eligias.

Here is a view from inside the gorge at Fliskounias. Zaranokefala to the east (right side).

(ii) a west-to-east fault appears to be along a line Linoseli (Gingilos) saddle - Xiloscala - Kalergi - Poria - and further east). The north side strata tilt down towards the north. This line either bends in a north-south direction at Tripiti gorge or joins a separate north-south fault (parallel to Eligias) somewhere in the area of Tripiti gorge.
Here is a photo looking west to Gingilos-Volakias from Poria. The dashed green line encircles light grey lower strata which makes up Gingilos. This is overlaid with a harder, dark grey limestone with strong plate structure. Red lines indicate direction of tilt on either side: to the south at Volakias, to the north at Kalergi.

Here is a photo taken on road from Kalergi (looking south in direction of Melindaou) - so on opposite side of Samaria gorge from Gingilos. The same structure of strata is clearly visible, lighter rock underneath harder more plated limestone. This is what implies the continuity of fault line cutting across north end of Samaria.

(iii) Might the entire Ginglios-Volakias massif, including Tripiti, Klados, and Samaria be the result of one massive block? In the Gingilos-Volakias photo the tilting of Volakias strata appears to be downward north-to-south (sometimes almost vertical), markedly different from either the NW-to-SE tilt of Eligias or the S-to-N downward tilt of Kalergi etc. or the apparent E-to-W downward tilt of the west end of Tripiti.

{O} Geographical Information System of Chania Prefecture (no replies)

Dear Kriti-lovers,

Good news in today's Haniotika Nea newspaper! I cannot wait to get the address of the upcoming web site (tu) .

Quote

On the natural environment of Chania Prefecture - 16 September, 2009
Digital protection

Monitoring and protecting the natural environment of the prefecture is the purpose of the Geographical Information System in the prefecture of Chania, which will be presented at a ceremony today at 10 am in the Board Room West Crete of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE).

Yesterday, at a press conference of the District it stated that this system will monitor places like the Samaria Gorge and will promptly intervene in case of fire and all citizens can have "digital" access to the system.

In a news conference yesterday the Prefect of Chania, Grigoris Archontakis, said "the project" Geographic Information System in the prefecture of Chania 'refers to support for the maintenance, development, protect the environmental and historical character by law, and to make the relevant decisions. In the same framework a comprehensive crisis management system is developed, to combat fires in the Samaria Gorge and will be providing information to operators of the county and citizens on issues and areas related to the environment via the Internet.

For the project a digital geographic database of the Prefecture will be created with all the thematic information layers available, like: administrative county boundaries, cities, municipal districts, villages, digital elevation models, separate roads, fire outbreaks with their point of origin, fuel types, and illegal land dumps. Also protected areas of the county, Natura 2000 areas, and land coverage, protected areas, and it will classify the existing activities or facilities which are directly linked to the outbreak of fire, classified maps of vegetation, classified forest maps, wildlife refuges, protected forests and forest land, geology and soil type, the river network, and the division of areas, sites, places of tourist interest, etc.

According to the Prefect of Chania, the project, which will group and connect together all available information so as to produce a comprehensive picture of the department, will be a valuable tool for any organization.

The purpose of the meeting which will be undertaken in the TEE is to collect data and encourage the institution of laws.

Mr. Archontakis added that: "The 'Geographical Information System in the prefecture of Chania" will not only protect the Samaria Gorge and the mountains of the prefecture. In the system we can include information that will digitize all roads in the prefecture of Chania on the basis of agriculture, forestry, provincial, municipal areas, Natura protected areas, landfills, protected areas, forest maps, shelters, protected forests, water costs, etc. It is a file that each institution should have participation in, so the conclusion of having a central database at county level which can be accessed by anyone who has to do with the land of the county, and is wishing to implement this development.

The General Secretary of the Prefecture of Chania, Kyriakos Kotsoglou, stated that "when the database is completed anyone can come to be notified about urbanisation as a part of the land and can be informed on how close to the networks, the road is, what the coordinates, what land is, how it is used, the crops it had previously, if it is forest, how close are archaeological sites, etc. All this information will be digitized and available to every citizen. Essentially, the Prefecture is trying to create - with the collaboration of all stakeholders- an open system that will be available to the entire public. "

As pointed out by Kotsoglou, the next time the Prefecture of Chania will create an GIS agency, a Topographical Department in the Prefecture, that will manage this information.

The "Geographic Information System in the prefecture of Chania" is the recording, viewing and monitoring of the natural environment of the prefecture of Chania and will be available in a wide range of institutions and to individuals.

The G.I.S. (Geographical Informations Systems) or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a system of collection, storage, management, analysis and display of information on matters of geographical nature which has experienced great growth in the last two decades. It is a scientific area that includes an impressive range of methods and techniques, generalized and specialized for processing, analyzing and presenting geographic data of the environment.

The "Geographical Information System in the prefecture of Chania will be implemented with funding from the Prefecture and the Program Information Society.

The project is scheduled to be finished by 31/12/09, with a total budget of around EUR 600,000.

Translated from: Haniotika Nea
[www.haniotika-nea.gr]
