today was the memorial at the Thymniani Panagia Church in Komitades....in this church, so its said, at 29th May 1821 the Crete Revolution against the Turks started....

today I will give you some impressions outside Sfakia...yesturday we went with the primary school on the summr school trip....we went to Arkadi....in the Cave of Sfendont in Zoniana and last but nit least to Anogia...a great trip and all the kids have had really fun...

when I woke up, it wasn't such beautiful outside....because I didn' saw anything...it was very very foggy, I didn't saw my neighbours house ;-) ...later I took my boys to scool and went a little more far in the east and the west...what I saw than was really beautiful for me...normally I know this fog from Askifou ;-) ....but not from down here...I like this very much....

browsing 2006 album, came across this. Must have been taken above Loutro in early May. They're quite common but huge (a good 3 to 4 feet tall) and stikingly beautiful. Does anyone know what they're called in Greek and English?

This was our first New Year in Sfakia.
Crete in Winter is something very different from what we are used to!

This has been an interesting discussion. I've learned a lot.

But I'd like to introduce a bit of a diversion while we have people, some seemingly quite knowledgeable, discussing geology:

A couple of months ago, in another forum, JimB raised the question of what forms the dam in the Eligas gorge. Unfortunately there was no answer to that question.

I agree with Jim and Mike that the dam does not appear to be a scree fan. Does anyone know what it is?

Those who once took the ferry from Ag. Roumeli to Sougia and Paleochora will remember that some 10 minutes after leaving Roumeli a whitish "wall" appears at the coast, with a beautiful and in most cases empty beach and a small gorge leading up into the mountains. This beach is called Domata and the gorge behind it is the Klados gorge.
To my personal opinion the wall forms the remains of a larger slope that went into the sea long time ago. As many of you may know, Crete was tilted due to a huge and devastating earthquake thousands of year ago. The western part was lifted. Everywhere you can see the prove for this: a band somewhere a few meters above sea, more to the westcoast even 8 meters above sea level. At Marmara beach the band is very clear. At some places like Lyssos, you can find now uninhabitated old shells of the so called "stone borers" or "piddocks", sitting in the holes they made thousands of years ago.
The harbour towns like Sougia and Lyssos were useless after this huge cataclism. Apart from the fact that most inhabitants were killed. In Sougia, you can still see the old sea floor to the west of the village. The bump in the road coming down from Chania into Sougia close tot the supermarket is to my opninion part of the old shore line. Also in Lyssos the pebbles reveal history.

Anyway, this white wall slowly disappears into the sea. The material is very breakable being sand and stones and rocks. It consists of debri from the Levka Ori. It must have been much longer a long time ago.

This beach was always a challenge for us, so one day we decided that we would like to spend a day there.

It was great fun there. Also in the gorge, which is very narrow at some places. However, I didn't go that far into the gorge.

BTW anyone who visited places on the east coast, like Mochlos or Kato Zakros, knows that the eastern part of Crete went into sea. At Mochlos, parts of the old village can be seen in sea at a few meters deep. I believe that the small island some 100 meters from Mochlos was connected to the mainland. I think at Elounda and Spinalonga, old towns can be found at the sea floor too.

For those who were interested in the Gre Leska topic I put some of our last December pictures in a small web side. Unfortunately the sun was rather close to the horizon and therefore on most of the south western looking pictures the sky is overexposed. However, I guess the remaining pictures will give you an nice impression. My daughter insisted on me not to get too close the border of the cliff and therefore I didn't make vertical pictures into the Irini gorge. To be honest, it was rather scarry at the cliff. But the view ...

For some stupid reason I didn't make a picture of the house. Next time.

Bettina 0%% has just sent me her lovely photo report of the annual festival of Agios Spiridon on today's 12 December.

First the tamarisk tree gets cut outside of Hotel Stavris, and then, at the chapel of Agios Spiridon, there is a short mass, and then bread and wine, amongst a big group of local visitors.
