Yorgo’s walk down the Samaria gorge

1,300 meters up, 18 km from the end of the trail, ready to go	Descending the “Xyloskalo”, the wooden steps	And the steps are getting steeper	A rare glimpse of an “Agrimi”, the Kri Kri, Crete’s unique wild goat
Big, tall mountains to the east	Even taller mountains to the west	Trail path through huge boulders in the river bed	First stop at Agios Nikolaos, 600 meters down but still a long way to go
More boulders along the almost dry river bed	A drink stop at a crystal clear, cold spring	It still looks a long way to go	More boulders, is there any end to them?
Reached Samaria, the old and now abandoned hamlet, half way point of the trail	The gorge now is getting narrower	...and narrower	...and narrower
At last, the “Sideroportes”, the Iron Gates, narrowest point about 3 meters wide, with cliffs 600 meters high on either side	Track is opening up now	End of the trail, looking back	Agia Roumeli, 18 km later, the destination for a cool swim
